This movie has got to be my most favorite non-English movie in the foreign languages category.
The word “Rafiki” means friend in Swahili and is a beautiful yet satirical title for this story. This is the story of a friendship between two high school girls – Kena and Ziki. They meet at an election rally where their fathers are contesting against each other.

To watch a friendship blossom into love feels like you are falling in love. But it was bound to be tragic when this happens in a country where homosexuality is illegal. Their lives change after they are discovered, each pursuing their big goals in life, away from each other.
The scenes challenge the viewers through their blatant portrayal of the societal constructs built for modern women and make the movie powerful. The roles of Kena and Ziki are played by talented Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila Munyiva. Watch the movie here: https://mubi.com/films/rafiki-2018
